This photo, taken outside my house back when we had winter, makes me think of the little Black boy who used to sled down this street, on what seems to have been  known for a long time as The Hill in Great Barrington. Martin Luther King Jr was one of the civil rights leaders inspired by Du Bois, who lived from 1868 to 1963. He began writing as a teenager and continued to write through his 95 years. His autobiography, which we have now republished in a corrected edition, was still in manuscript when he died. Here are links to some of our books and stories about Du Bois:
