Description

Social capital is one of the most popular, as well as one of the most contested, terms in contemporary social science, straddling academic and applied boundaries. The term refers to the quality and quantity of our social connections, as captured in the saying, “It’s not what you know, it’s who you know.” It offers a transactional and quantifiable way of looking at community – something welcomed by some and criticized by others. Social capital has an intellectual history traceable to the Greek philosophers, while its contemporary usage has origins in the nineteenth-century social science of Tocqueville, Marx, Durkheim, and Weber. It has gained new attention in recent years as research shows how the decline in networks of trust and reciprocity contributes to social isolation and political polarization. Contributors to Social Capital: A Very Short Introduction include Michael Woolcock, Xavier de Souza Briggs, Andrew Leigh, Kristin Goss, Robert Mark Silverman, and others from a group of experts brought together by Thomas Sander of the Saguro Seminar at Harvard (founded by Robert D. Putnam, author of Bowling Alone) to contribute to the Encyclopedia of Community (Berkshire/SAGE).
