Booklist: August 2004 Star Review –
Because there really is nothing available like this encyclopedia, it is a must buy for academic libraries, particularly where leadership is taught as an academic topic. In addition, it is recommended for any academic and large public library that can afford the rather hefty price tag. Extremely well done, with good-quality print and illustrations, this work should become an important resource for active citizens as well as for managers and scholars.
Compass (Harvard/JFK Center for Public L: Fall 2004 –
The Encyclopedia of Leadership is a massive work that may well fulfill its aspirations as a stimulus to the flowering of leadership as an academic discipline. Whatever that fate, there is no question that it will serve a host of audiences as the unequivocal reference and authority in the field for years to come. For teachers of leadership it offers an authoritative entrée to a rich helping of topics, with copious references to the pertinent literature following each article. It also is a goldmine of examples of leadership, both good and dysfunctional, with enough personal detail to serve anyone wishing to illustrate presentations on leadership. For fledgling or advanced students of leadership, it is a reliable guide to the major scholars, topics, and literature, organized skillfully for easy access. Its “Bibliography of Significant Books on Leadership” will be useful to guide students of leadership at whatever level to major sources of information. It also offers a comprehensive directory of leadership programs throughout the world – some 250 in all – with guidance to websites that keep track of developments in such programs.
The Encyclopedia of Leadership is a model of a modern reference book that should be in every professional library, taking its place alongside other distinguished reference works. It also belongs in the personal collection of every person seriously interested in leadership, whether as student, scholar, or practitioner.
Choice: October 2004 Highly Recommended –
The editors provide extensive general information and primary materials on the subjects of decision making, management, administration, motivation, and supervision, and the cognitive and value structures that affect their application…. Readable, attention-grabbing, and unordinary…. This source … brings interest and excitement to a subject overlooked by the consultants, CEOs, and coaches whose earlier works captured a small view of leadership subject matter. Summing up: Highly recommended. All collections.
