The introduction to this final volume in the Berkshire Encyclopedia of Sustainability offers background on the inspiration for the work and the rationale for including various topics. Editors sought expert contributors who could present their research in lay language to make the work widely accessible. They also “tried to avoid suggesting that all problems are equal or…must be solved at once. “The editors acknowledge that opinions differ in debates about sustainability and that controversy is inevitable. Entries in volume 10 focus on topics crucial to the future of humanity and humankind’s relationship with the natural world. Earlier volumes explored sustainability as it relates to spirituality and the environment, business, law and politics, natural resources, ecosystem management, and research methods/indicators. In addition to v. 10, readers should consult the other final volumes of this encyclopedia for perspectives on sustainability in various regions of the world. Appropriately for a major work on this topic, Berkshire Publishing’s printer, Thomson-Shore Inc., is a member of the Green Press Initiative. The encyclopedia is printed on 30 percent postconsumer recycled paper, and each volume includes a brief report of the resources conserved. The editors have made judicious choices about featured topics, given the vast geographic scope. Entries in all the volumes are organized alphabetically in traditional encyclopedia style. Volume 10 has a table of contents, list of entries/contributors, reader’s guide, and useful index. Like earlier volumes, it features cross-references, “further reading” suggestions, and signed entries. This 10-volume set (also available electronically) is a valuable acquisition for libraries. Summing Up: Recommended. Lower-level undergraduates and above; general readers.

Reference & Research Book News –
Suitable for early undergraduate or general readers, the publisher’s 10-volume Berkshire Encyclopedia of Sustainability has been carefully planned to bring together a great deal of information in a package structured for student research. The planners have taken the very broad concept of sustainability and looked for logical ways to divide and sub-divide relevant material for presentation in alphabetically arranged articles.
