The Sustainability Project

About the Project

Our mission is to provide citizens as well as educators and students with comprehensive, balanced, up-to-date books and articles. These publications cover climate change in all dimensions as well as infrastructure, urbanization, agriculture, design and engineering, space exploration, rural life, and social satisfaction.

About Berkshire

Berkshire Publishing is led by CEO Karen Christensen, an award-winning environmental author since 1989. The latest is The Armchair Environmentalist. She is also the founder of the Train Campaign, a project of the Barrington Institute. Karen’s books have been translated into French, German, Swedish, Chinese, Japanese, Korean, and Thai.

Encyclopedia of Sustainability

We need find a better way to live on Planet Earth. With this in mind, Berkshire Publishing is creating a new integrated edition of the 10-volume Berkshire Encyclopedia of Sustainability, enhanced with dozens of new articles and a fresh focus on climate change.

The 1,000+ articles in this unique set will provide authoritative but succinct coverage of a vast range of global environmental challenges – and solutions.

No other reference so thoroughly and dynamically surveys the history, current research, and developments that are of vital interest to students, professionals, and general readers. No library should be without it! “Everyone who is ready to get serious will profit from this robust, comprehensive, diverse collection of cutting edge thinking from some of the smartest members of our species.” —Denis Hayes, organizer of the first Earth Day.

The authors include nearly a thousand experts in business, law, ecosystem and resource management, history, and philosophy.  “This comprehensive set of volumes will help form the core of a library for informed citizens.” —Bill McKibben, founder of

It has even received praise from the UN leader whose name is most closely associated with the concept of sustainability. “The Encyclopedia of Sustainability, written by experts yet addressed to students and general readers, will support education, enable productive debate, and encourage informed public participation as we join, again and again, in the effort to transform our common future.” —Gro Harlem Brundtland, chair of the World Commission on Environment and Development and three-time prime minister of Norway.

Berkshire’s founder and CEO, Karen Christensen, has been writing popular books about green living since 1989, which her Home Ecology was a bestseller and chosen one of Britain’s Top 20 Green Books in a national promotion sponsored by The Observer. Karen is continually looking for ways to reduce the environmental impact of its activities while ensuring that vital information reaches a wide readership.

We see the Sustainability Project as a platform for global cooperation, and a way to promote US-China cooperation at a time when this crucial relationship is in jeopardy. We are proud that the Berkshire Encyclopedia of Sustainability includes editors and authors at the Chinese Academy of Sciences 中国科学院 and other institutions, and that the first edition has been published in Chinese by Shanghai Jiaotong University Press.

Every volume is available separately, both in print and as an ebook. Here’s a little about the process of putting together this landmark publication, from the introduction:

By gathering the work of so many experts we also experienced something about how ideas go from being crazy to feasible, or from being farfetched to being commonly accepted. This shift is something blogs and newspaper articles can’t capture, but an encyclopedia can. In effect we are taking a wide-angle snapshot here of something in an almost continual state of change, but the big picture—the panoply of ideas evolving to meet a complex, fast-changing, far-ranging set of global issues—is one we clearly need to see. Otherwise it’s just too difficult for those working in one part of an environmental field (whether ecosystems management, urban design, or bioremediation of toxic waste) to make broad connections and forge new collaborations. Our aim is to make it easier for a high school teacher, a financial manager, or a global executive, for example, to get a handle on the issues most relevant to their work and to the students, citizens, shareholders, and customers for whom they are responsible.

We had seen too many cases where people weren’t basing decisions on measurable impact, and weren’t weighing different options or approaches in a rational way. We had observed that environmentalism can sometime come across as a kind of religious faith to be adopted and adhered to no matter what. We were also concerned about making this project something that people on different sides, in different countries, can trust. In the years we have been working on this, the problem of trust has become much more important in the USA: even science is being “doubted” now by certain groups, as if it were just another religion. Including so much on measurements and indicators (Volume 6) is a clear statement of how important it is to us that people be able to back up proposals for change.
