It’s so easy, now that my Cingular phone has been unlocked, to set up for local calling in a new place. I arrived in Hong Kong, checked in, and walked across the street to a little shop. “SIM card” is understood everywhere. 68 Hong Kong dollars, about US$9. I took the China SIM out, put the HK SIM in, and that was that. I now have a local number for the people I need to see here, 9014 4152. To dial from the U.S., that’s 011 852 9014 4152. Text messaging works fine, too (I tested it with Skype SMS). I can’t believe I didn’t know about this before.
The joys of an unlocked phone
