Consumerism is devotion to the acquisition of material goods that are not necessary for subsistence. Consumerist societies feature a variety of institutions designed to purvey desirable but unnecessary goods and to encourage desire itself. They also feature a value structure in which people measure their own lives and the condition of their society in significant part by opportunities for acquisition.
