All of a sudden, it seems, there's no shortage of information about environmental problems and no dearth of people calling themselves experts on sustainability. Now, with the 10-volume Berkshire Encyclopedia of Sustainability, in both print and online versions, Berkshire Publishing solves the problem of information overload. We've commissioned clear, concise overviews from true experts (not advocates) on a vast array of sustainability-related topics, and we've compiled their work in attractive, thematic volumes. Into each volume we've packed solid research data, thorough analyses, and precise, jargon-free discussions, effectively transforming a huge and fast-developing research domain into a publication people can get their heads and hands around.

The encyclopedia as a whole provides complete but compact coverage of what today's readers need to know about sustainability, from the theories, societal values, and practices that have shaped and challenged our concept of it, to industries as diverse as pharmaceuticals and mining that impact it, and to methods and measurements, such as life cycle costing and material flow analysis, that assess its progress and chart its future.

We at Berkshire have created a unique global network of experts in business, law, environmental history, ecosystems and resource management, ethics and philosophy, and other related disciplines. These experts have put their research into laypersons language for us, often for the first time, and as such most of the material in these 10 volumes is unavailable elsewhere. The 1,200-plus articles (nuggets of knowledge, as we like to call them) are reliable, readable, and carefully edited for clarity and balance. We've enriched the work in these volumes with fascinating details, the kind of real-life contextual coverage we are known for: in Volume 3, for instance, we include case studies of important historic legal decisions and describe the natural or human-made disasters that prompted the legal action.

We expect the Encyclopedia of Sustainability to be a central resource for major universities as well as for regional high schools, small public libraries, community colleges, local government offices - and thus the starting point for a wide range of student research, expert cross-education, public presentation, and program planning. Articles in the encyclopedia can also be purchased or licensed individually for use in classrooms and on company intranets, as backgrounders in reports across disciplines, or in professional databases devoted to corporate training.

The global range of coverage in the Encyclopedia of Sustainability makes it an exceptional tool for businesses focused on green opportunities around the world. Berkshire takes readers beyond Corporate Social Responsibility to look at the biological, technical, and social challenges that need redirection in public policy, business enterprise, and scientific innovation.

Educators, researchers, and professionals in a number of sustainability-related fields should also keep an eye on our forthcoming Berkshire Essentials in Sustainability series. Each topic-specific book will gather articles that appeared within the volumes of the Encyclopedia of Sustainability - about environmental law or energy industries worldwide, for instance - to provide concentrated and custom-tailored coverage. (Our Essentials series will also draw on other of Berkshires "hot topics," such as world history, China, community, and sports.)

Berkshire, with the support of the Center for Energy, Environment, and Sustainability (CEES) at Wake Forest University, is also pleased and proud to announce the October 2011 launch of a quarterly journal, the International Review of Sustainable Business and Law (IRSBL). The IRSBL, designed to meet high academic standards through rigorous peer review, fills a distinct gap in the resources available to the professionals and scholars who work toward understanding sustainability challenges. By emphasizing narrative, case-study presentations - all of which are based on expert analyses of legal decisions, events, and specific corporations efforts to face the challenge of sustainability - the IRSBL aims to reach practitioners, professors, and researchers who are actively testing and implementing new methods and strategies to ensure a more sustainable world.

Creating an Encyclopedia of Sustainability once seemed an important but impossible task. But thanks to more than 800 expert authors (and counting) from over 50 countries, a dedicated editorial board, and the diligence of numerous volume and reviewing editors, it is indeed a 10-volume, 1,200-article reality.
