David Christian has a D.Phil. in Russian History from Oxford University. David taught Russian History and “Big History” at Macquarie University in Sydney, Australia, for 25 years and is now based at San Diego State University. He has published on 19th century Russian social history (including studies of rural diets and the role of vodka in Russian history). He has also written a history of modern Russia, a history of “Inner Eurasia” before the 13th century, and a text on “Big History.” David is currently working on the history of “Inner Eurasia” since the 13th century.

David’s ability to move between world history, cosmology, and biology, and to look at historical and philosophical questions in the largest possible contexts, has made him an exceptionally valuable – and often challenging – advisor.

An independent researcher, Paul Duguid currently holds positions as part-time visiting professor at Copenhagen Business School, Department of Organisational and Industrial Sociology, and a research specialist in Social and Cultural Studies in Education at the University of California, Berkeley. The author of The Social Life of Information (2000), his writing has appeared in a broad array of scholarly fields and journals, as well as in a variety of less specialized publications, including the Times Literary Supplement, the Nation, and the Threepenny Review.

Paul was the keynote speaker at the Association of College & Research Libraries National Conference in 2003 and frequently speaks to librarians about issues related to information technology and information access. Paul received his MA in English Literature from Washington University, St. Louis, Missouri in 1980.

Steve Hibbard, formerly chief executive of Lonely Planet, became part of the Berkshire management team during a sabbatical year in western Massachusetts in 2003-4. Originally from New England, Steve has spent over 10 years in Australia. After several years in New York as a banker, he attended business school in Melbourne. At Lonely Planet, the travel guide company that was started in the 1970s by Tony and Maureen Wheeler, he was international chief executive for almost a decade, presiding over the company during a period of tremendous international growth and spearheaded the development of a substantial online presence.

As a London-based banker, Emma Howard has been involved in international business development for 20 years. After graduating from the London School of Economics and an early career in trading, she began to combine her interests in international finance, communication, and leadership. Bilingual in French and English, Emma's current work involves team building in many countries in Asia. She is also active in creating training programs and in global leadership projects. She and Karen Christensen shared a London flat in the early 1980s, meet now on both sides of the Atlantic, and are currently trying to schedule simultaneous business trips to Beijing.

Nancy Kranich is Past President of the American Library Association (ALA) for the 2001-2002 year. As ALA President, Nancy articulated the key role of libraries as the cornerstone of democracy, undertaking projects related to information literacy partnerships, social capital building, civic forums, information equity, and bridging the digital divide. A tireless advocate for the public’s information rights, Nancy has spearheaded ALA's freedom of information initiatives, launched the Association's first advocacy training program, and established the James Madison Awards honoring champions of the public's right to know. Prior to serving as ALA president, she was Associate Dean of Libraries at New York University.

Nancy’s involvement in the movement for an “information commons” provides Berkshire with many ideas about its role as a publisher and with a vision for transformational leadership in 21st century publishing.

William H. McNeill is the Robert A. Millikan Distinguished Service Professor Emeritus of History at the University of Chicago. Bill has written more than 20 large and sweeping books, presenting his topics in a direct and compelling writing style. His many books include Plagues and Peoples, Venice: The Hinge of Europe 1081-1797, The Rise of the West: A History of the Human Community, which received the National Book Award, Mythistory and Other Essays, History of Western Civilization: A Handbook, The Pursuit of Power: Technology, Armed Force, and Society since A.D. 1000, The Human Web: A Bird’s Eye View of World History, and Keeping Together in Time: Dance and Drill in Human History.

Bill is the Senior Editor for the five-volume Berkshire Encyclopedia of World History, published January 2005.

Joyce Ogburn is the Director of the J. Willard Marriott at the University of Utah. She holds degrees in anthropology from the University of North Carolina at Greensboro and Indiana University, and an MS in library science from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. Her professional focus has been on collection development and acquisitions, preservation and access to knowledge resources, digital library development, and scholarly communication. She is involved in several national organizations including the American Anthropological Association, the American Library Association, the Association of Research Libraries, the Center for Research Libraries, and the Scholarly Publishing and Academic Resources Coalition (known widely as SPARC). In the publishing world, Joyce has served on the editorial boards for Against the Grain and Choice Magazine. She also advised on the development of AAA’s Anthrosource and currently oversees the University of Utah Press.

Sue Polanka is Head of Reference and Instruction at Wright State University Libraries in Dayton, Ohio. She has over 17 years of library experience in reference and instruction at public, academic, and state libraries. While at the Texas State Library, Sue provided continuing education and training to librarians across the state through workshops and videoconferencing events. he currently serves on the ALA Dartmouth Committee and is the Chair of the Reference Books Bulletin Editorial Board, where she has served on the Board and been active in book reviews for over 6 years. Sue is a frequent contributor to RBB, ALA publications, and presents at many library conferences. Her writings and presentations focus on specialized product reviews of print and electronic sources, the use of technology in reference and instruction, and Ereference books. In January, 2008, Sue's regular column on Ereference books will appear in Reference Books Bulletin. She is currently on the NFAIS and Academic Library Association of Ohio conference planning committees, and is active with the OhioLINK consortium in both interface development and training.

Saugman, Peter


Peter Saugman was a director at Blackwell Science and is now a publishing consultant. He and Karen Christensen have known each other since she got a summer job in the London office of Blackwell Scientific in 1979. He, Karen, and another Blackwell colleague, Derek Albiston, appeared together in Publishers Weekly when they published an item about Berkshire's contract signing at the 2006 Frankfurt Book Fair with the Guangdong People's Publishing House.

David A. Tyckoson is president of the American Library Association’s Reference and User Services Association for 2007-8 and head of public services at the Henry Madden Library, California State University, Fresno. He has a B.S. in Physics and M.L.S. from University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign, likes Harry Potter and trains, and recently received the Isadore Gilbert Mudge Award, the "lifetime achievement" award for reference librarians. Dave has also written two articles for Berkshire, one on library innovations for an issue of Against the Grain guest-edited by Karen Christensen and another for the Berkshire Savant called, “Why Can’t a E-Book Be More Like a Book?” Besides this, he is known to enjoy an annual visit to the Saratoga racetrack.
