Do librarians love books?

I read a startling anecdote on The Good Library Blog from the well-known British novelist Susan Hill (who is also active, amazingly, in the blogosphere). Public librarians in Britain can't wait to see the end of book buying and book stocking? Surely this is not true in the United States (or elsewhere), and how could it be true in the U.K.? Surely one of the things that leads a person to librarianship is a love of words and writing, whether for entertainment or scholarship or a bit of both.
