The earliest poppies and buttercups

Spring Flowers - poppies and buttercupsWe may not think of the spring flowers Bloodroot and Hepatica as poppies and buttercups, but they belong to those families respectively.  Both flower early in woodland environments before there are leaves on the trees to block sunlight.  Both are insect pollinated.  Because woodlands often look bare before spring green dominates the landscape, it is easy to miss these spring ephemerals.  A few warm days and they have done their job for another year.
