Speaking of ways in which the United States isn’t quite as technologically advanced as we might like to imagine (and as our wealth might suggest), I’m still puzzling over how $1.34 billion dollars could be spent on a program that hands out $40 to people who are still using “rabbit ears” to get television signal, to get everyone ready for the switch to digital broadcasting. Here’s an article on the TV transition. But I haven’t seen an answer to the obvious question: How many people were still using rabbit ears? $1.34 billion would provide a $40 certificate to 10% of all Americans and leave some spare change.
