Publishing about China is always a fascinating challenge, but in these recent days it’s all the more complex. Yet so much of the press coverage isn’t complex at all. Here’s the first print press mention of Berkshire’s China Gold, in connection with the Olympic torch relay, “Torch as lightning rod, Olympic attention is magnet for protests,” quoting Duncan Mackay extensively, and me briefly. I’ve been reading about Tibet – there are some great articles in Berkshire encyclopedias, in fact – and will post some of the more helpful here as a background primer for those who would like to understand some of the historical and cultural issues at work, as well as the politics. The British role in Tibet is one thing, for example, that I hadn’t known about.
