I’m told that in China it’s considered polite to leave a comment, even if just a mild note of approval. Lots of people are incessant commentors (and even use software to track their own comments – it must be nice to have that much free time). Lots of other people would not dream of writing a comment (though I suspect that will change gradually). What I find interesting is to see the intense debate that goes on at some blogs (Tim Coates’s Good Library Blog, for example, where we’ve set up a design that makes the comments appear on the main page, something I’ve not seen anywhere else yet).
As for me, I’ve been enjoying comments on past literary posts – this gives me a sense of the other people out there who love Trollope or who would like to see me finally publish something about Sophia Mumford.
