Here’s a remarkable perspective, brought to my attention by Tom. The Church of England has declared that “It’s a sin to fly. “Claire Foster, the churchâ€™s environment policy director, said: ‘Indiscriminate use of the earthâ€™s resources must be seen as profoundly wrong, just as we now see slavery as wrong.'” As you can imagine, I think this is a tremendously hopeful step. Churches can change the world, as our Religion & Society series, begun in 1998, so clearly shows. The Church of England’s position is what we, in England, used to call ‘deep green’ rather than ‘light green.’ It’s clearly the right time to be starting a major project on sustainability, and I can already see the articles on this in our planned Volume 3, The Spirit of Sustainability.
