Jane Jacobs’s unique place at Berkshire Publishing

We don’t publish biographical entries on living people, not because we want to follow that old English reference model but because doing so is so fraught with conflict (I guess that’s why the English have that rule). There is only one person we made an exception for, Jane Jacobs, who died last week. We commissioned a biography of her for the Encyclopedia of Community and then missed her name when we went through and eliminated the living–because I didn’t think she could be!
